Sleeping Around

Over the many years of touring, I've slept in a lot of places, folks. I've dedicated a web page just to mention some of the places that stood out in my mind, for whatever reason. In some cases the prices are listed; the year for such is on the bottom right. Do keep in mind inflation happens...

OREGON

This place was clean, quiet and offered FREE internet/computer use - not just wireless. Good food was within walking distance - and - the hostess actually handed us some wash rags upon registration for cleaning our bikes.

MONTANA

Heading south on Hwy 89 from East Glacier Park, through Blackfeet Indian Reservation, this was a welcome oasis after riding through extremely hot temps. Sitting just south of reservation lines, this Inn offered a pool and laundry facilities. Rates were a little steep, U$ dollars, but it was clean. One problem - there are no exterior doors from the individual rooms themselves - you have to carry your gear and request a perimeter room to see your bike. Tired and heat stricken, I realized this after paying. If you park around back, it's pretty secure. There was an excellent restaurant/steakhouse just up the road from here, on the same side of the road. Can't remember the name, other than it had the word Elk in it.

Super kind people. Very comfortable, like going home. One great breakfast - pancakes, fruit, the works. Excellent bang for the buck. Even dried out our very wet gear...

Absolutely serene, your hosts Michel and Louise will certainly make you feel as though you would like to stay longer. If Michel is feeling up to it, he'll entertain you with pleasant music, played on the grand piano in the lounge area. Beautiful tapestry-covered walls and fine antique furnishings adorn the rooms. Internet access and inground pool are just some of the accommodating features at Maison Greenwood. Located minutes from Cowansville in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, Maison Greenwood is near the action - ski centres, horse riding centres, golf and vinyards, to name a few places.

 MICHIGAN

The next morning, we stepped outside to find polish rags placed on our bikes. Continental breakfast and within walking distance of restaurants. If my memory serves me correct, I found it pricey. After riding all day in cold rain, it didn't matter.

MONTANA

Nice and clean, with a great little restaurant just a hop-over-a parking-lot away. However - this faces a mountain - where some pretty nasty storms are spun. check below...

MONTANA

Alder Gulch was the scene of Montana's greatest placer gold rush in the spring of 1863. By the fall of 1864, nearly ten thousand people crowded the surrounding hillsides. Small settlements were so numerous and so scattered that contemporaries called the area "Fourteen-mile City'. Virginia City and its near neighbor, Nevada City, were the main centres of commerce.

Give yourself a few days here - you'll need time to explore Virginia City. You get your own key to the place (at least I did) and you have the place to yourself. Furnished in antiques and collectibiles, your host will fill you in on some local history. If you're a light sleeper, you may even hear the cattle drive that is run up the main street early mornings.

SASKATCHEWAN

(Sorry dudes- this one didn't scan so well.)

Can't remember the rates for this place, but they must've been cheap. I do remember it was near a Dairy Queen (of utmost importance after a long day's ride) and had a great little pool. There was an excellent restaurant attached to the premises also. PLUS it's near Prairie Cycle - so if you need service for your Harley, Dan and the gang are the greatest bunch of guys around.

QUEBEC

This place resembled a motel when I first saw it from the outside. It was an absolutely clean and beautiful place. The husband/wife team really went all out on the decorating. Your special lady will love this one. Very good continental breakfast and considering it's just off Hwy. 55 North in Quebec, it's very quiet. The parking area is hidden from view of highway traffic as well as local traffic - which is great for bikers. Its safe, clean and quiet. Need I say more?

MONTANA

Although I never actually slept here, I did see the premises. Elegantly country - horns, Indian/Western theme, the whole ranch thing. I eventually opted to sleep at Virginia City. However, the proprietor was very kind, proudly showed her cabins, talked a little history and offered a welcoming attitude. It is set in the "ghost town" of Laurin, Montana. Beautiful place, kind people. Simple.

IDAHO

Although it's in a rough looking area, right on the main drag of Idaho Falls, this place was clean and air-conditioned. An important feature considering I had just turned down another motel because they had NO air conditioning. The temps were 115 degrees+ the day I took this room. Also - quick note - the guys behind the desk were very polite and helpful. They took care of a parking problem (the parking problem being someone else was in my spot). The young man behind the desk went door-to-door just to find out who was in the incorrect spot, but to no avail. Eventually he gave me another room and a discount for the inconvenience. Very accommodating crew here. Continental breakfast included.

This place was near grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations.

 NOVA SCOTIA

Sorry guys, but this flyer went through a lot on our way to Newfoundland; almost four weeks on the road, during which it unfortunately got wet!

What sets this campground apart from others is the hospitality offered from its host, long-retired senior citizen Jack McDonald. Mr. McDonald takes the time to personally greet all of his newly registered guests, and chat with them not only about their travels but also to fill guests in on the history about the place. From his stories of the big fire at the lumber mill the grounds once held to the tales of the Great War, Jack McDonald makes each person's visit very special. The bonus - cheap rates ($11.00) plus HOT showers.
